The Tea Cozy is a knitting shop for everyone—from the absolute beginner to the most experienced knitter. We offer a wide range of classes and workshops for all skill levels. Come meet other knitters and learn from our friendly instructors in a setting that’s comfortable and, of course, cozy. Our goal is to inspire you, give you confidence in your skills, and make you a happy knitter.

Intro to Knitting$60

Three 90-minute sessions

Longing to wrap yourself in handmade wooly goodness this winter? Never held a knitting needle before? No problem! In this class we’ll cover all the basics of knitting: casting on, knitting and purling, binding off, and seaming your finished garment. At the end of the three sessions you will walk away with your very own chunky cowl—and the know-how to make much more!

Skill Level: Absolute beginner. No prior experience necessary.

Intro (or Re-intro) to Crochet$45

Two 2-hour sessions

SaturdaysOctober 3 & 10, 10:30–12:30 OR
 December 5 & 12, 10:30–12:30

Learn the basics of crochet or enhance your existing skills. Crochet a small bag while you learn several stitches and how to read patterns and symbols.

Skill Level: Beginner or beyond.

Intro to Fair Isle Knitting$45

Two 90-minute sessions

ThursdaysSeptember 17 & 24, 6:30–8 pm

Been wanting to try Fair Isle knitting, but don’t know where to start? This is the class for you! And while you’re mastering the art of stranded colorwork, you’ll be making an oh so lovely hat designed just for this class. Learn how to read a color chart, work with two colors at once, and keep your floats nice and loose. Never underestimate the importance of loose floats.

Skill Level: Confident beginner. Must be able to cast on, knit, purl, make decreases, and be comfortable knitting in the round.

Intro to Socks$60

Three 90-minute sessions

ThursdaysOctober 1, 8 & 15, 6:30-8 pm

Handmade socks are the best! Whether they’re for you or someone special. And once you understand the somewhat perplexing construction, they’re surpisingly easy to make. Really! In this class you’ll learn basic sock anatomy and make your very own sock from start to finish

Skill Level: Confident beginner. Must be able to cast on, knit, purl, and be comfortable knitting in the round.


Christmas Stocking$45

Two 2-hour sessions

SundaysNovember 22 & December 13, 12-2 pm

A great introduction to sock knitting, including turning the heel. Fat yarn and big needles make it go fast.

Cabled Hat$45

Two 2-hour sessions

SaturdaysNovember 21 & December 5, 2-4 pm

Knit a handsome Irish Hiking Hat (good for men and women alike) while learning to do cables. You will have a beautiful hat just in time for the holidays.

Skill Level: Confident beginner. Must be able to cast on, knit, purl, and be comfortable knitting in the round.

Marius Baby Sweater$75

Four 90-minute sessions

ThursdaysNovember 12 & 19, December 3 & 17, 6:30-8

Inspired by the traditional Norwegian Marius sweater, this adorable baby version has all the lovely designs and construction features of its grown-up cousin. You’ll create a sweater from start to finish while using a number of helpful techniques along the way, including setting up and cutting steeks. If you’re new to steeking, we recommend that you take our one-day steeking workshop. At the end of four weeks, you will have a true heirloom!

Skill Level: Intermediate. Must be able to knit in stranded colorwork, read a color chart, and pick up stitches.


Stitch Pattern of the Month$12 per class or six for $60

1-hour session

Second Tuesday of every month, 2-3pm

As long as people have been knitting, they’ve been combining knit and purl stitches in different ways to create hundreds of patterns. Each month we choose a different pattern to master and knit into a square—a fun way to expand your knitting repertoire. Once you’ve made enough squares, we’ll show you how to crochet them together to make a baby blanket or afghan. Join any month.

Project Help for Knit & Crochet$15 per class or six for $75

Need help with an especially challenging project? Got yourself into a fix you can’t get out of? Rediscovered a project that’s been hibernating so long you can’t figure out where to pick it up again? We’re here to help! Call ahead to reserve a spot. We can get you over a rough patch, or guide you from cast-on to bind-off.


Reading Patterns$25
SaturdaySeptember 26, 2-4 pm

If you’ve ever read through a pattern and had your eyes glaze over, this class is for you. Abbreviations, charts, and repeats are all addressed in this essential to knitting class.

Skill Level: All abilities.

Steeking with Confidence$25
ThursdayNovember 5, 6-8 pm

Steeking means cutting your knitting. With scissors. It’s a technique used in many traditional sweater patterns, especially in Norwegian and Fair Isle work. It’s also one of the most daring feats a knitter can do. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll receive step-by-step instructions on how to cut a steek-skillfully and confidently. Students will receive a pattern for a stranded colorwork swatch in the round to bring to class.

Skill Level: Intermediate. Must be able to knit in stranded colorwork.

Fixing Mistakes$25
SaturdayOctober 17, 2-4:30 pm

Tired of ripping back your knitting when you make a mistake? Sometimes you can’t avoid it, but not always. Learn to spot and fix twisted stitches, dropped stitches, running stitches, yarn overs, and more. We’ll cover them all—and more—in this essential to knitting class. Homework will be given prior to class.

Skill Level: All levels.

Finishing Like a Pro$25
SaturdayOctober 24, 2-4:30 pm

Sew together seams, weave in ends invisibly, close up holes under arms, and learn other tips and tricks to give your project that finished look. These skills will help with those last few steps that can be so elusive to many of us. Homework will be given prior to class.

Skill Level: All levels.

Class Policies

Classes are limited in size and are filled on a first-come, first served basis. To sign up please call us at 206.783.3322 or stop by the shop.

All classes and workshops require payment in full upon registration. Students must call 24 hours in advance if they are unable to attend a class and may rebook for another class or receive a store credit. No refunds are issued for missed classes. If we cancel a class, you’ll receive a full refund.

Yarn and other supplies for all classes are available at The Tea Cozy and can be purchased anytime before the class begins. Just make sure leave yourself plenty of time to fondle all the yarn. Registered students receive 10% off all class supplies.
